The Bachelor of Science program in American Sign Language/English Interpreting has the goal of educating students to become community interpreters who possess analytical skills, a breadth knowledge, and an ability to combine and synthesize the diverse and complex aspects of human language behavior in contemporary society. Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is one of a small number of universities to offer a bachelor's degree in Interpreting.

The curriculum sequence is designed to teach interpreting as a face-to-face process that is conversational in natureand prepares students as community interpreters in medical, legal social welfare, and educational settings.

For students who already possess a bachelor's degree, a certificate program is offered. The certificate program consists of the ASL, Deaf culture, and linguistics requirements along with the core courses of the Interpreting major. All students are expected to participate in a practicum experience.

Creative Writing

The Creative Writing Program at IUPUI offers a wide range of courses and activities in a diverse urban setting. Writers can try their hand at a variety of genres, including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting, at all levels from introductory courses to graduate workshops.  Interested students can pursue a creative writing minor or an English major with a creative writing track. Teaching English as a Second Language Program

The English Department offers a TESL Certificate (Teaching English as a Second Language Program) for students who have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and who would like to be trained in teaching English to non-native speakers of English. Students will become familiar with the major theoretical foundations of teaching English as a foreign and second language and acquire experience through practice teaching in authentic ESL classrooms. The student who completes the TESL Certificate will be able to teach ESL and EFL to adult and post-secondary learners in the USA and overseas.

University Writing Center

The University Writing Centers (UWC) are places where you can sit down with an experienced reader who will provide assistance with your writing.  It's a place where students (graduate and undergraduate) can go for help with writing assignments and projects for any class.  The UWCs offer a variety of services, but students most often take advantage of opportunities to work one-on-one with experienced readers.  All UWC services are free to IUPUI undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff.
