Graduate Studies

Admissions

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Ordinarily, applicants are expected to have been English majors, but admission will be considered also for those who otherwise demonstrate the competency necessary for successful graduate work in English.

Careers in English

Degrees & Programs

IUPUI’s graduate English program has been designed to prepare students for careers in the analysis and production of texts. To this end, the program covers issues and skills in reading and writing in the richest sense of these words — in order to prepare students to address these issues and to teach these skills.

Faculty

Information about the faculty who work with the IU Department of English's Graduate Studies Program. Learn about their interests, publications, and general backgrounds.

Internships

This internship will be a supervised experience in the uses of language in a workplace, such as a company, a governmental agency, a nonprofit organization, or an educational institution (IUPUI or another). Your internship experience should be integrally related to your MA course work and/or your thesis topic.

Thesis

The final requirement for the MA is the master’s thesis. Depending on a range of factors–your nonacademic time commitments, the amount of relevant research that you have done in your course work and internship, and so forth–your thesis should take from 6 months to a year to complete.

Financial Aid

In addition to this campus-wide financial aid, the Department of English offers a limited, but growing, number of associate faculty positions, research assistantships, and fellowships. Research assistantships awarded by the English Department require an application; details will be announced at the time of selection (usually the spring before the assistantship year).
