Admissions Requirements
Applicants should
have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Ordinarily, applicants are expected to have been English majors,
but admission will be considered also for those who otherwise demonstrate
the competency necessary for successful graduate work in English.
In addition to
undergraduate records and letters of recommendation, applicants’
scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)-only the general
test is required and, for international students, the Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), are considered in the admission process.
Special student
status is occasionally granted by the English Department Graduate
Studies Committee to some students who do not meet all requirements
for admission. Such students are admitted provisionally and are
expected to make up any deficiencies within a specified period of
time.
Applicants should submit the following:
-
Completed application form for Indiana
University Graduate School
-
Official transcript of previous college
and/or university work
-
Three letters of recommendation (from
university instructors and/or professional associates)
-
Verbal, quantitative, and analytic scores
from the GRE (International students must also submit TOEFL
scores.)
Since the schedule
of the program is based on Fall admission, applicants should complete
the GRE by December of the year prior to admission. Information
about the dates of the GRE can be obtained by writing to Graduate
Record Examinations, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000,
Princeton, NJ 08541-6000 (telephone: 609-771-7670). Information
about TOEFL can be obtained from the International Affairs Office,
620 Union Drive, Room 207, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5167 (telephone:
317-274-7294).
Application forms
are available from the Department of English, 502M Cavanaugh Hall,
IUPUI, 425 University Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46202-5140 (telephone:
317-274-9841). Completed forms and other materials should be sent
to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English.
Applications are welcome at any time, but for full consideration
for admission in the fall semester, applications must be received
by 15 April. To be considered for University Fellowships, applications
must be received by 15 February.
Applicants who
wish to begin course work before their admission to the Graduate
School may do so through the Graduate Continuing Non-Degree (GND)
program. Application forms for the GND program are available from
the Department of English. (Ordinarily not more than 12 GND credits
may be counted toward the degree.)
