The IUPUI English as a Second Language Program is a component
of the English Department at IUPUI and serves the campus
international community by providing English language
courses designed to meet ESL students’ academic needs.
Our courses support all the various academic departments
by offering intermediate to advanced English courses to
help prepare students to enter and succeed in their various
fields of study.
ESL classes are small, ranging in size from five to twenty
students and are taught by trained and experienced teachers
using interactive, communicative teaching styles. The
classes focus on the academic English skills students
need to be successful at the university level. Special
emphasis is given to teaching advanced listening,
speaking and reading skills, as well as complex English
grammatical forms and structures, and academic composition.
All international students apply to IUPUI through the
Office
of International Affairs. After admission and subsequent
arrival in Indianapolis, they take the ESL Program Placement
Test for accurate placement into the program courses.
Students then meet with their academic advisor to plan
their studies.
Indiana
University - Purdue University at Indianapolis is
a unique urban learning environment of more than 27,000
students representing 100 countries. The IUPUI campus
includes twenty different Indiana University and Purdue
University schools offering a total of 182 undergraduate
and graduate degree programs. International students come
from all over the world to study here and to learn about
American culture in the safe Midwestern city of Indianapolis,
Indiana.
Indianapolis is the prosperous and expanding capital
and largest city in Indiana, but is surrounded by the
rolling farmland for which the state is famous. Indianapolis
is nicknamed the "crossroads of America" because several
major interstate highways intersect it. Chicago, Cincinnati,
and Louisville are all within a three-hour’s drive. Major
cities on the East Coast (NY, Boston, Washington, DC)
and in the south (Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans) are only
a day’s drive or quick plane trip away.
Although Indianapolis is a cosmopolitan urban center
of over one million people, the city is very spread out.
Many visitors comment upon the lush, tree-lined neighborhoods
and the city’s many parks. In fact, Indianapolis boasts
the largest city owned park in the US! It’s a great place
to visit and an interesting setting for your higher education.
