Careers in English
Many colleges and universities have good Web pages on careers for English
majors, so there's probably no need for us to develop a new one. One of the
best sites is at
Southern Connecticut State University. In addition to its original
content, it includes, on its Bibliography page, links to other good career
sites.
In Professor Ken Davis's office, CA 501N, is a small
library of books on careers and internships, any of which you're welcome to
borrow. They include:
-
Basalla and Debelius, "So What Are You Going to Do
with That?": A Guide to Career-Changing for M.A.'s and Ph.D.'s
-
Bly, Careers for Writers and Others Who Have a Way
with Words
-
Bridges, Creating You & Co.: Learn to Think like
the CEO of Your Own Career
-
Feingold, No More Coffee-Pot Internships
-
Ferguson's Careers in Focus: Writing
-
Field, 100 Best Careers for Writers and Artists
-
Frothingham, How to Make Use of a Useless Degree:
Finding Your Place in the Postmodern Economy
-
Giangrande, The Liberal Arts Advantage: How to
Turn Your Degree into a Great Job
-

-
Guiley, Career Opportunities for Writers
-
Mackay, Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty: The

-

And remember: one of the very best steps you can
take toward a career is doing an internship!
Internship
Opportunities
To do an internship in
the University Writing Center, students must apply to the Writing Fellows
Program by contacting Tere Molinder Hogue,
tmhogue@iupui.edu,
274-5650. This program offers experienced student writers opportunities to
learn more about their writing while tutoring students in the University
Writing Center. Those accepted to the program enroll in the W396 Writing
Fellows Training Seminar, which prepares them to work as effective peer
tutors and enhances their awareness of language, both written and oral.
Fellows tutor six hours a week. This is one of the best internships
available for students interested in writing and/or any form of teaching,
tutoring, or training.
English Department Internships
The
college degree you are working toward is a solid investment in your
future. However, as you know, it's becoming increasingly difficult for
graduates to find the jobs they want. That's why the Department of English
encourages you to make yet another investment in your future: an
internship. An English department internship is a unique, yet readily
available, opportunity for you to take your learning beyond the classroom
and into the workplace.
"My internship
experience has been challenging, frustrating, yet exciting and fun.
This is a great combination."
(This quotation and others on this page are from former English
department interns.)

What
is an internship?
An internship is an on-the-job learning opportunity designed to supplement
your classroom work with practical, hands-on experience. IUPUI's English
department offers internships under the course number ENG E398: Internship
in English, for 3-6 credit hours. Each credit hour requires 50 hours in a
workplace; these hours may be completed over a time period less or more
than a semester, or they may span two semesters.
The
Department of English also offers W396, an undergraduate tutoring
internship in the University Writing Center (for more information about
this opportunity, contact Writing Center Coordinator Tere Molinder Hogue,
CA 429, 274-5650, tmhogue@iupui.edu.
Why
should I do an internship?
An
English department internship is designed specifically to help you work
with, and improve your knowledge of, the English language and the ways it
can be applied. From this experience you will find not only a better
understanding of the language itself, but an opportunity to:
-
learn beyond the
classroom environment
-
explore various
career opportunities before committing to them
-
gain experience in
career-related fields
-
prove your ability to
perform at the professional level
-
make valuable contacts
in the professional world
-
find permanent
employment, perhaps with the organization in which you intern
"Classroom
instruction is great. But putting my skills to work for a nationally
recognized organization will probably be the best instruction I will
ever receive."
|
Who is
eligible for an internship?
To do an
internship, a student must:
-
-
have at least a 2.5
grade point average
-
have completed at
least one semester at IUPUI
-
be seeking a degree
-
have successfully
completed a 300- or 400-level writing course, or get approval from the
department's internship coordinator, Professor Kenneth W. Davis, CA 501N,
274-0084, kdavis@iupui.edu
How do I find an
internship?
Begin by attending an internship orientation offered by the
IUPUI Internship
Program. (For information, go to
http://www.career.iupui.edu/studentsf.html, then click on Internships.)
In addition to the internship resources available through the Internship
Program, you may get information from Professor Davis, including several
books and reports of past interns.
An internship should provide a new, structured, supervised learning
experience in writing or other language activities. Please note that
internship credit is not given for:
-
work done as part of
your current job
-
work completed
before beginning the internship
-
work done in your
home or an employer's home
-
work done for an
employer who does not have an expert employee who can guide your work
and from whom you can learn
"All of the
experience, along with becoming a published writer, has made my
writing internship a valuable and positive experience."
|
How much does an internship pay?
Some
internships do not pay in an immediate monetary sense; instead, they offer
experience and learning that can pay in the future. Some internships do pay
a salary or stipend, negotiated between you and your employer.
How do I
register for my internship?
-
Complete your portion
of the Internship Proposal Form which is provided on the "Forms and
Documentation" link on the left margin of the internship Web site.
-
Have the employer
complete his or her portion of the Internship Proposal.
-
Turn the Internship
Proposal Form in to the Internship Program in the Career Center. The
Internship Program will forward it, along with additional supporting
information, to Professor Davis in the English department.
-
Wait to hear from the
Internship Program. This wait should be no longer than 1 week. Please
contact Sarah Reed
(sarareed@iupui.edu) if you haven't heard from her after one week; she
will inform you of the English department's decision regarding your
internship at the e-mail address you provided on your Proposal. When
Professor Davis approves an internship on behalf of the English
department, he will authorize you to register for E398.
-
When you receive
approval from the Internship Program, you may register for E398.
What happens during
my internship?
-
Sarah Reed, with
Professor Davis or the Career Center Director, may conduct a site visit.
Sarah Reed will make these arrangements.
-
Record your work
experiences in a journal, using the instructions at
http://www.career.iupui.edu/journaling.pdf.
-
If any problems arise,
contact Sarah Reed or Professor Davis immediately.
|
"I know, without a
doubt, that I am now better suited for a career as a business or
technical writer than I would have been." |
How do I
get credit and a grade for my internship?
At the end of your internship, submit to the Internship Program:
-
your weekly journal
of activities/hours of work
-
your Student
Evaluation (provided by the Internship Program)
-
your Employer
Evaluation (provided by the Internship Program)
Professor Davis, on
behalf of the English department, will submit a grade for E398 based on
these materials.
If you have not completed the necessary hours by the end of the semester,
please contact Professor Davis. If the internship is proceeding
satisfactorily, you will receive the grade of "I" (Incomplete). When you
have completed the necessary hours and submitted your required materials,
the "I" will be changed to the grade you have earned.
